Dayenu by Sofia (album review)  -  02nd May 2010

Sofia are a Brazilian alternative rock band who raised £15,000 from fans and investors via music financing website Slicethepie.com. For the last 2 years Sofia have been working on recording their album Dayenu - to be released on 3rd May 2010. Sofia have been featured on Chile station, Radio Zero and have been interviewed by Switch TV.

The album begins with As 1, which certainly is a monster of a song in it's own right. With delicate precision to performance and dynamic arrangement As 1 is an incredibly original, fresh and well composed rock masterpiece with an excellent progressive alternative edge reminiscent of bands like System Of A Down. As 1 is followed by Monster, probably the most mainstream track on the album with highly melodic vocals, entertaining original lyrics and a very catchy chorus. I Will Be There is a softer sweeter song with simple instrumentation but emotionally charged tuneful vocals and lyrics. Upon first listen, The Last Song appears to be the stand-out track, with fantastic melodic lead guitar throughout the song is certainly a highlight.

By about halfway through Dayenu it's clear that Sofia like to modernize their music with very subtle electronic extras which are evident throughout the album. Most impressively though, are the alternative yet classical piano performances that are present. Very dynamic, very diverse, very dramatic and overall the album oozes originality- this is evident on Falling.

Towards the end of the album, I did find that some tracks such as Perfection and Hmong People had a more mainstream grunge style to them, some of them a little calmer and more restrained than their previous tracks though they lacked some of the originality that oozes from the first half of the album. However, each song seems to be spiced up nicely with catchy fill-in guitar riffs.

The album ends nicely with a fantastic track too, Shut The Pill, once again slightly reminiscent of System Of A Down but less sinister and probably catchier. Overall Dayenu by Sofia is a breath of fresh air, the songs are well composed and arranged and the band have come out with something highly original.
